Tomorrow is the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive and it seemed like a good opportunity to donate/replace the vegetarian food in my emergency preparedness kit with vegan food. Too bad none of the emergency rations / MREs (meals-ready-to-eat) I bought at the army surplus store last year are vegan (just noticed the lentil stew I was going to keep has Vitamin D3).

Here’s the food I’ve added to the kit so far:

  • 365 Organic (Whole Foods) canned black beans, which happen to be low-sodium though they’re not labeled that way (reminder to keep a can opener in your kit)
  • Clif Kid Organic ZBar, energy bars, in chocolate brownie and chocolate chip; the ones I bought yesterday expire next January but on the upside they are delicious
  • Trader Joe’s Fruity Flakes, box of 6 pouches, sweetened with fruit juice not sugar, expire next April
  • Trader Joe’s Fully Cooked Organic Brown Rice bowls, expires next February; was planning to eat them with that lentil stew I’ll need to find a substitute for…
  • Trader Joe’s Organic Apple Sauce With Wild Berries, 4 individually-sealed cups, expires next March, sweetened with apple juice instead of sugar (not that it needs it)

Good start, but needs some more savory items (I would add the pouches of Kitchens of India chickpea curry, but they are too spicy and have way too much sodium). I got most of that stuff from Trader Joe’s (as if that wasn’t obvious) but Whole Foods should yield better results and a Part 2 to this post.

Edit: Forgot I had this at the bottom of the kit — an “emergency food ration” packet of 9 “fortified food bars”, which I don’t look forward to ever eating. The first ingredients are flour, vegetable shortening, and sugar, and also contains “vitamins”.
